Personal Electrolysis

Removing unwanted body hair has been a concern of women for ages. Many go the route of waxes, creams and even plucking, but end up repeating the process in order to reap the benefits. While electrolysis is a favorite method of permanently removing hair, it can be quite expensive. That’s why some people turn to their own version of personal electrolysis.

In the spirit of do-it-yourself mentality, there are now machines that a consumer can use at home to take the place of expensive salon visits- but without the exuberant price tag. While the prospect of saving considerable amounts of money is always appealing there are some things that should be taken into consideration before you perform this procedure on yourself.

These machines use basically the same concept as the ones in salons; only you have to perform it on yourself, or have an assistant.

Underneath the skin’s surface is a mixture of mineral content. When an area is isolated for treatment this machine sends electrical currents down the hair shafts into the follicle. The resulting current creates a reaction between the water and the salt in the skin to form sodium hydroxide. This is an extremely corrosive alkaline agent that works to dissolve the hair follicle, as well as the papilla. This is intended to destroy these areas causing the hair to resist re-growth.

While the same concept is being used, the method of application differs. Electrolysis uses an electrical probe to send the current down the hair shaft. With these devices, a hair is grabbed with tweezers connected to the current. The current is passed down into the hair using a silver-chloride gel, which is highly conductive of electricity. The gel allows the current to travel down into the hair follicle.

Since this is a permanent form of removing hair each individual hair must be isolated. This takes time and practice. And it only treats visible hair so if there is new growth it will require additional treatment sessions in order to completely treat an area. It is estimated that after each treatment there should be approximately a 20 percent reduction in growth for that area.

Personal electrolysis might not be for everyone, but it is certainly a more appealing option than spending the time and money to have a professional do it for you. Their sessions generally take place once a week or so and can last for a year or more. Plus, each visit is expensive. So when you factor in all of these points utilizing one of these machines may seem like the perfect way to go.
